Shanghai ― A Booming Metropolis


Shanghai has a total land area of 6340.5 square kilometers, 0.06% of China’s total territory. The Shanghai city has 15 administrative districts and one county. There are also three islands under city’s jurisdiction. They are Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha islands, among which Chongming is the third largest island in China. By the end of October, 2015, the population of permanent residents in Shanghai has reached 24.15 million.
Shanghai is situated between 30°40′-31°53′ north latitude and 120°52′-122°12′ east longitude. Located on the west bank of the Pacific Ocean, the east coast of Asia mainland and the front of Yangtze River Delta, Shanghai enjoys advantageous geographic location. Bordering on affluent Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces on the west, Shanghai is washed by the boundless East China Sea on the east and the torrential entrance of Yangtze River on the north. Shanghai has a sub-tropical monsoon climate, four distinctive seasons, abundant sunlight and sufficient rainfall. The annual average temperature of the city is 17.6℃.
As an international metropolis, Shanghai has established sister or friendly relationship with 75 cities (provinces, states, regions, counties or districts) in 53 countries. In 2010, themed “Better City, Better Life”, the 2010 World Expo was successfully held in Shanghai, attracting over 73 million visitors from all over the world. 
Shanghai specializes in a number of crafts including embroidery, inlaid lacquer, gold and silver filigree work, water – color wood – block print, carving in jade, ivory, bamboo, as well as wood, silk, double – sided embroidery, clay sculpture, paper – cutting, lanterns and artificial flowers. Tourists might as well try some local snack food specialties, such as Five – flavored Beans, Ligao Candy (sweet and delicious, with a strong medicinal effect in the treatment of coughs), Roasted Sweet Chestnut, Steamed Buns, as well as dim sum (Chinese refreshments and pastries).
